I thought I came here brokenhearted, Trying just to understand How a life I'd loved for years Could change beyond what I had planned. I brought the questions and the memories, Every tangled thread I knew, Never dreaming all that telling Was preparing for something new. We walked backward through the stories, Trying to make sense of now, Finding pieces of my childhood, People, places, when and how. Faith and family, work and wonder, Things I'd lost and things I'd learned— Every answer opened something, Every memory took its turn. What an unexpected gift— I thought I came here just to heal. I didn't know that all those hours Were uncovering what was real. Every question left a window, Every story left a thread, Till the life behind the memories Could be understood, not simply read. And when I finally found the courage To give my whole life back its song, I thought we were starting something— But we'd been writing it all along. Anyone can write a history: Names and places, dates and years, Where you lived and where you traveled, What you built and who was there. But a life is more than what happened; It's the why beneath the when, It's the meaning in a moment You don't recognize till then. So when Midnight crossed the meadow With that little girl astride, Arms stretched wide above the saddle, Once again I felt her fly. It wasn't just a childhood story, Just a horse I used to ride— There was something of the woman Living within that little child. Maybe healing wasn't only Making peace with yesterday. Maybe every tear and question Was preparing me this way. While I thought I told one story, A whole lifetime gathered near— Waiting for the day I'd turn around And finally see it there. The joy beside the sorrow, The woman and the child, The faith beneath the questions, Every road and every mile. Not just what my life looked like— But the heart that carried on. All those months I thought were processing Were helping write my song. What an unexpected gift To receive this birthday year— Something born from what I never Would have chosen to come near. I wouldn't choose the breaking, I wouldn't ask to walk it twice, But somehow through the healing I came home to my whole life. Now the memories have context, And the years have found their song. There's a depth I couldn't manufacture— It had to grow this long. I thought the gift was finding healing. I thought the gift was moving on. But somewhere in the telling I found A Life Worth Singing— And learned... We'd been writing it all along. No ribbon could have wrapped it. No box could hold this gift. A lifetime waiting to be heard— And a voice prepared to tell it. Happy birthday to the woman Whose story still goes on. There is so much life worth singing. And we've been writing it all along.
