Symphony No. 9 in B-flat major 【Movements】 I. Allegro con brio II. Vivace III. Andante IV. Presto V. Sehr ruhig — Das Lied, das blieb (The Song That Remained) 【About the Work】 Symphony No. 9 was composed largely after the completion of Symphony No. 8, “Scourge of War.” The first movement to be written was the finale, Das Lied, das blieb (“The Song That Remained”), based on an episode written by a friend and set to a German text for alto solo and orchestra. The finale was inspired in concept by the last movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, where the human voice appears after the preceding instrumental movements. Musically, however, the work looks further back, favoring a simpler, more classical orchestral language. Despite the historical weight associated with the title “Symphony No. 9,” this work was never intended to follow the monumental model of Beethoven’s Ninth. Its scale is closer in spirit to Shostakovich’s Ninth: relatively compact, yet filled with contrasting themes, colors, and characters. The symphony consists of five movements. After the first three, the fourth bursts into a lively polka inspired by Johann Strauss, combining the excitement of a sightseeing train with the anticipation of a theme park. Its brilliant ending creates an almost false finale before the alto solo enters in the fifth movement, turning the music inward toward personal memory. The Ninth also serves as a form of purification after Symphony No. 8, “Scourge of War.” While the Eighth confronts the violence and destructive energy of war, the Ninth moves toward motion, tranquility, joy, memory, and what one person leaves behind in another. The story of Das Lied, das blieb itself is not about war. The connection between the two symphonies is spiritual rather than narrative. After the vast world of “Scourge of War” comes a smaller, more human symphony—one that ultimately leaves behind the memory of a person and a single song. 【Instrumentation】 Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, harp, strings, and alto solo. Movement I: Allegro con brio — B-flat major The first movement opens with the powerful sound of the full orchestra and energetic, driving strings. Firmly centered in B-flat major, the music develops from the outset through short motifs passed between different sections of the orchestra. Majestic brass writing and constantly moving strings provide the movement with a strong sense of momentum. The intensity soon subsides, giving way to a gentler, more lyrical idea led primarily by the woodwinds and strings. In contrast to the brilliant, outward character of the opening, the melody now comes to the foreground, passed between instruments to create a softer expression. This calm does not last long, however, as the strings gradually regain their activity and the powerful character of the opening returns. From the middle of the movement onward, the principal motifs repeatedly reappear in altered forms. Rapid string figures, brief woodwind responses, and strong brass accents are combined and rearranged. Rather than simply repeating a complete melody, fragmented motifs move between instruments and registers, continuously driving the music forward. This process forms one of the movement’s defining characteristics. The music later returns to a more lyrical mood. Woodwind melodies and flowing string accompaniment temporarily ease the tension, although the underlying rhythmic motion never disappears completely. Alternating between moments of calm and activity, the orchestral texture gradually grows denser until brass and strings once again build a powerful sonority near the end. In the final passage, rapidly ascending strings intensify the tension, concentrating the momentum that has propelled the movement from its opening. The movement concludes decisively with a clear chord from the full orchestra. This movement also incorporates a leitmotif originally written for the second movement of Symphony No. 7, “Dramatica.” The musical material itself dates from early 2026 and was later developed into a new form for Symphony No. 9. Comparing the two movements reveals how the same musical idea has been transformed and given a different role within each symphony.
