[Break] Once more I hold you to my heart Once more I hold you to my heart, as through the walls we sway. And though so long we've been apart, it seems it was just yesterday. When you and I were seventeen, and life and love were new. The world was just a field of green, with smiling skies of blue. That golden spring when I was king, and you my wonderful queen. Do you recall when love was all, and we were seventeen? (When we were seventeen) (Do you recall when love was all) ( When we were seventeen) (when we were seventeen) You loved me in the olden days, when we were seventeen. And so they seemed like golden days, through all of the great days between. When you and I were seventeen, the world was just a field of green, with smiling skies of blue. That golden spring when I was king, and you my wonderful queen. Do you recall when love was all, and we were seventeen? [Outro] When we were seventeen When we were seventeen When we were seventeen I was king, You my queen . When we were seventeen When we were seventeen "When You and I Were Seventeen" was a classic popular song written by Gus Kahn in 1924 with composer Charles Rosoff, the song was published by Irving Berlin, Inc.. It became one of the top pop hits of 1925. Kahn often wrote about enduring love and looking back at young and was famous for writing lyrics on anything available—napkins, golf scorecards, or even his shirt cuffs—whenever inspiration struck. His life was dramatized in the 1951 biopic "I'll See You in My Dreams", starring Danny Thomas as Kahn and Doris Day as his wife and collaborator, Grace. "When You and I Were Seventeen" gained a second life in the 1974 in the film version of "The Great Gatsby" starring Robert Redford. It was used to help establish the authentic 1920s atmosphere of the film’s opulent, nostalgic setting. What you just heard of course was our own unconventional cover, which is much different than the original, but Kahn's original lyrics were used. You are listening to Public Domain Radio.
