The Glen Remembers - Celtic lament

[Verse 1] The snow came down on Glencoe In the year of sixteen-ninety-two The Campbells took their hospitality Under roofs where kindness grew For thirteen nights they broke their bread By peat fires warm and low But treachery wore a borrowed face In that bonnie, cursed snow [Chorus] The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers What the stones and rivers ken Murder under trust they call it A wound that willnae mend The heather knows, the stag knows The braes still carry pain The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers Blood upon MacDonalds' name [Verse 2] They rose before the morning light With orders cold as winter's breath Turned steel on those who sheltered them Dealt betrayal out as death The bairns ran barefoot through the drifts The women to the crags did flee While trust lay bleeding in the snow For all the world to see [Chorus] The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers What the stones and rivers ken Murder under trust they call it A wound that willnae mend The heather knows, the stag knows The braes still carry pain The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers Blood upon MacDonalds' name [Bridge] Some say the orders came from high Some say the fault lies with the crown But hands that struck were hands once warmed By fires in that town Nae king, nae paper writ can wash The stain from history's page The mountains hold their reckoning Through every passing age [Verse 3] Now tourists walk the valley floor Where innocence was slain They marvel at the beauty there But cannae feel the pain The wind still howls a warning song Through corries steep and wild Of what men do when hate runs deep And honor is defiled [Chorus] The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers What the stones and rivers ken Murder under trust they call it A wound that willnae mend The heather knows, the stag knows The braes still carry pain The glen remembers, aye, the glen remembers Blood upon MacDonalds' name [Outro] The glen remembers still The glen remembers still
