TIME 014 – The Morlocks | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller climbed downward through the shaft into the deep, Where iron throbs and darkness broke the silence of its sleep. The air grew close around him and the daylight disappeared, While somewhere in the blackness something living slowly neared. (Verse 2) Then pale forms moved around him with large eyes that shunned the light, Their flesh seemed made for tunnels and their limbs for endless night. The Morlocks watched in silence from the machinery below, Like creatures shaped by ages where the sun could never glow. (Chorus) The Morlocks lived beneath the world where hidden engines turned, A pallid race in darkness where no morning ever burned. They shrank before his matches and withdrew from every flame, Yet crowded through the shadows when the light began to wane. (Verse 3) He felt their hands reach towards him in the darkness at his side, And struck a match to drive them from the places where they hide. The sudden flame repelled them and their pale eyes turned away, For darkness was their kingdom and they could not face the day. (Verse 4) The tunnels held their labour and the pulse of ancient steel, A hidden world of movement that the Eloi could not feel. Above, the gentle sunlight warmed a race too weak to fight, Below, another people worked and hunted through the night. (Chorus) The Morlocks lived beneath the world where hidden engines turned, A pallid race in darkness where no morning ever burned. They shrank before his matches and withdrew from every flame, Yet crowded through the shadows when the light began to wane. (Bridge) The Traveller understood at last the future had been split, One people lived in sunlight while another avoided it. The ages had divided man through labour, wealth and place, And time had carved those differences into a separate race. (Outro) He climbed again towards the sky and left the depths below, But now he knew what waited where the wells breathed cold and slow. The peaceful world above him had concealed a darker truth, For mankind had not vanished, it had broken into two.
