Ballad of Mill Pond

Verse 1 There’s a place where the water once shimmered like glass, Where herons stood still and the summers would pass, Now the lilies have risen where the channel ran deep, And the pond lies half-dreaming, half-fallen asleep. Chorus So come mend the heart of sweet Mill Pond, my friend, Let’s bring her back ‘round the Stoney Brook bend, Don’t wait on the day when the money is right, Do what we can with the tools in sight. Verse 2 We’ll clear out the islands where the inlet once flowed, Slow down the stream and spread out  the load, Rake up the muck where the soft silt lies, Let the sunlight dance and the brook trout rise. Chorus So come mend the heart of old Mill Pond, my friend, Let’s bring her back ‘round the Stoney Brook bend Don’t let her fade ‘neath a study’s disguise, She needs your hands more than your compromise. Bridge Raise the old dam by a foot come July, Let her hold the rain when the streams run high, Draw her down gently when the frost takes hold, To cleanse her soul and renew her gold. Verse 3 Upstream the wetlands can do their part, To filter the world and soften the start, It’s a system, my friend, not a hole to be drained, It’s the pulse of a valley, the soul of the rain. Final Chorus So come mend the heart of our Mill Pond, my friend, She’s worth the fight and the time we spend, Not every dream takes a million to rise, Just a steady hand and some clear blue skies. Outro (spoken or softly sung) Take a step back, see the whole design, Let the water run clear and the shoreline shine…
