The Vault of Heaven

V5.5

[Intro: The acoustic guitar begins with a slow, rolling finger-picked pattern in an open tuning, resonant and woody. A single, low cello note swells into the mix, holding a steady, melancholic drone.] [Verse 1: The vocals enter, almost a whisper, delivered very close to the mic.] [The acoustic guitar continues its steady roll. The phrasing is hesitant, leaving space for the breath.] The neck arches back until the vertebrae grind. (Grind... grind...) Nothing but ultraviolet burning the eye. No canopy, no steeple, no place to hide the mind. Just the terrible gravity of a bottomless sky. (Bottomless...) Pressing on the collarbone. Pressing on the chest. (Pressing down) [Verse 2: The softly brushed snare enters, creating a restless, shuffling rhythm. The cello begins to move, playing long, aching counter-melodies beneath the guitar. The vocal delivery gains volume and a quivering edge, mimicking physical exertion.] The shadow shrinks down to the soles of your feet. (Oh...) Nowhere to crawl when the noon light breaks. The horizon is pulling... pulling the wheat. You can hear the dry ground as it fractures and bakes. (As it fractures) It’s too much air for the lungs to hold. Too much air. (Too much air) The ego goes quiet when the world gets this wide. (Quiet... quiet...) [Verse 3: The flugelhorn enters, playing a soaring, mournful line that echoes endlessly.] [The guitar is strummed harder now, and the cello plays aggressive, rhythmic bow strokes.] [The vocals are strained, pushed to the edge of breaking, adopting a rhythmic, chant-like incantation.] Crush the center, let it flatten out. (Let it out) Crush the center, let it flatten out. (Flatten out) There is no shelter in the open vault. Just the wind... just the wind... just the wind in the mouth. We are small. (We are small) We are so damn small. [Instrumental Peak: The vocals drop out. The track explodes in volume and density.] [The cello plays a frantic, rising progression while the acoustic guitar is violently strummed.] [The brushed snare turns into a thunderous, rolling tom beat.] [The flugelhorn blares a triumphant, chaotic fanfare that folds in on itself with delay.] [Outro: Only the fading tape-delay of the flugelhorn remains, ringing out into the emptiness. Vocal are reduced to a dry, exhausted gasp.] Heavy... (Heavy) Sky. [The last flugelhorn echo fades into tape hiss.]
