My keys are down, my coat's on the chair, One in the morning, I'm standing there. He walked me to the car, said, “Take your time.” I said I had fun. I didn't have to lie. He was easy, he was kind, Never pushed, never crossed a line. If somebody asked, I'd call it good. So why did I answer before I understood? Nothing was wrong. It should've felt right. He made me laugh. We talked all night. I had no reason not to try. But I said no, And I don't know why. He never said, “You should move on.” Never acted like the past was gone. He knew when to ask and when to leave it be. Never made a project out of me. I ran it back from start to end, Like maybe I'd missed something then. But every reason sounded thin. Whatever this is, it isn't him. Nothing was wrong. It should've felt right. He made me laugh. We talked all night. I had no reason not to try. But I said no, And I don't know why. I keep looking for the reason In something that he did. But there isn't one. Nothing in me said, “Too soon.” Nothing in me said, “Not yet.” I just didn't want to say yes. And the whole drive home, I kept saving things To tell you. Nothing was wrong. It should've felt right. He made me laugh. We talked all night. I had no reason not to try. But I said no, And I don't know why. I kick off my shoes and turn down the light. The house settles back into quiet. I open our chat without a thought And type, “I'm home.”
