Not Us

[Verse 1] The news reports just kept on comin' in Another border closed, another war begins They said it was a sickness, spreadin' fast and wide But I saw the shadows lengthen off Jefferson and Vine [Chorus] And it rolled in slow, with the screen glow blue Every house held its breath, nobody knew what to do Sirens in the distance, a low sound draggin' through We kept sayin' not us, but it kept comin' through [Verse 2] Mum kept the TV low, let the kettle hiss Dad stacked the paper on the chair by the fridge Kids still rode bikes through the busted-up lot Past the corner store with the plywood board it got [Chorus] And it rolled in slow, with the screen glow blue Every house held its breath, nobody knew what to do Sirens in the distance, a low sound draggin' through We kept sayin' not us, but it kept comin' through [Verse 3] The mayor stood up straight in a borrowed suit Talked big about calm like he had proof But the bus still skipped stops, the payroll came late And the line at the pharmacy curled round the gate [Chorus] And it rolled in slow, with the screen glow blue Every house held its breath, nobody knew what to do Sirens in the distance, a low sound draggin' through We kept sayin' not us, but it kept comin' through
