Poison and the Sapphire 2 by Joshua Mossman
Verse 1: The Empty House The driveway is silent, the rain’s coming down, On the hollowed-out block of a hollowed-out town. He stands in the doorway where shadows once crept, In the room where a sapphire once suffered and wept. The money is stacked, but it’s heavy as lead, A kingdom of ashes, a crown made of dead. For the first time in years, in the quiet so stark, He looks at his hands and he sees in the dark. Pre-Chorus: The Realization At the back of the lot sits a house on the bend, Where five broken lives on his poison depend. He looks through the glass, sees the wreck that he made, The mothers he stole and the debts never paid. The venom he peddled to line his own coat— Now the weight of their sorrow is clutching his throat. Chorus Every choice is a shadow that follows us home, Every seed that we scatter takes root in the stone. He counted the paper, but lost every light, Now the venom is gone in the dead of the night. No guard dogs are barking, no wire to keep, Just a hollow man learning to finally weep... Oh, learning to weep. Verse 2: Dropping the Poison He walks to the river beneath the gray sky, Where the phantoms of guilt gather round to ask why. He spills every bag till the water runs clear, Trading his empire for sorrow and fear. No deals on the corner, no phone in his hand, He buries the ghost in the hollowed-out land. The poison is scattered, the poison is done, He turns from the shadow and looks for the sun. Bridge: The Dust on the Shelf Karma was paid, but the ledger remains, He’s sitting alone in the cold and the rains. In the dust on the table, forgotten and small, Lies a book from his childhood, the oldest of all. He opens the cover with trembling hands, Reading of mercy in desolate lands. "Though your sins be as scarlet," the ancient ink reads, A whisper of hope for a garden of weeds. Verse 3: The Sanctuary Line after line, through the stillness of night, The words of the scripture are cutting through light. He reads of the lost and he reads of the blind, And the grace that can heal even hollowed-out minds. No longer a king on a throne made of rust, He falls to his knees in the ashes and dust. Not to earn back the sapphire he drove far away, But to answer the debt that he’s calling today. Final Chorus Every choice is a shadow that follows us home, Every seed that we scatter takes root in the stone. He sold all the venom, and he paid the full price, Now he’s breaking the chains of his terrible vice. No longer a dealer where the dark shadows stay, Now he’s washing the rust away... Oh, he’s washing the rust away. Outro One driveway... five houses... The porch in the rain. The poison is gone, leaving only the pain. He turns through the pages, the sky soft and gray... And a quiet voice whispers: A new life today.
