Scratching the Surface

--- Closing out the Grunge "album" and this will be the next to last song. Wanted something totally "out there" but still had a grunge vibe to it. Settled on attempting to mash up Grunge and Plunderphonics . . . lol. Worked out much better than I expected and wound up being fun and unique. Definite "Grunge Roots" in there, but still got the scratching and sampling that I was looking for. Success and I enjoy it when two very different musical styles somehow mesh just fine when Suno gives it a go. ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Music Build Up] [Verse 1] Grey hangs low like a second ceiling Rain taps thoughts I’m done repeating Coffee’s cold, my pen won’t move Same four walls, same worn groove Streetlights hum, shoes splash past Everyone’s just tryin’ to last Heads down, collars turned Every engagement gets spurned [Pre-Chorus] I came out here to clear my head But it’s just echoes instead [Chorus] I’m scratchin’ the surface, diggin’ for sound Lookin’ for somethin’ I haven’t found Every idea feels borrowed or cursed But I keep on scratchin’ the surface first [SAMPLE BREAK 1 – Vinyl crackle / chopped vocal loop / loose beat] [No vocals – let fragments loop, drift, misalign] [Verse 2] Window glow on faded sleeves Static ghosts from decades past Kids bent over spinning time Making futures from the past Needles dance, the records fight Wrong notes land but feel alright Then there’s a guitar by the wall Strings bent wrong, tuned to fall [Pre-Chorus 2] I smile and ask if I can play They shrug like, “Sure… why not today?” [Chorus] I’m scratchin’ the surface, breakin’ the skin Pullin’ new blood from old patterns Nothing’s clean, but nothing’s cursed When you stop diggin’ deep and scratch the surface first [SAMPLE BREAK 2 – Turntable scratches + detuned guitar riff] [Guitar and samples collide, trade space, overlap imperfectly] [Bridge] Laughin’ at the noise we made Half mistake, half holy phase Never gonna sound the same That’s kinda why I stayed [SAMPLE BREAK 3 – Extended plunderphonic jam] [Loop fragments, cut vocals mid-word, drop beats in and out] [Final Chorus] I was scratchin’ the surface, chasin’ control Tryin’ to carve somethin’ out of stone Turns out sparks don’t come rehearsed They show up when you scratch the surface first [Outro (spoken / half-sung)] I’ll take it home Cut it apart Stitch the noise into somethin’ sharp Still scratchin’ the surface But now… I know where to start [Musical Ending] [Fade Out] [End]
