FRANK 019 – Adam and Satan | Frankenstein
(Verse 1) He found abandoned volumes and carried them away, Then read beneath the branches through every passing day. Their pages gave him kingdoms, gave sorrow shape and name, And taught him human virtue beside corruption’s flame. (Verse 2) In Milton’s fallen angels he saw a world of pride, And Adam walked in Eden with heaven at his side. He asked if he were Adam, created to belong, Or Satan cast from favour and driven into wrong. (Chorus) He read of Adam cherished beneath his maker’s hand, Then saw himself forsaken with nowhere he could stand. No Eve had shared his exile, no paradise was won, He envied even Satan, who never stood alone. (Verse 3) Then Victor’s private journal revealed his earliest days, The labour of creation, the horror and amaze. He learned his maker loathed him before he drew a breath, And every written sentence felt colder still than death. (Verse 4) The pages named his body a thing of dread and shame, Yet none had ever asked him what kindness might became. He knew himself rejected before his life began, Condemned without a hearing by his creator’s plan. (Chorus) He read of Adam cherished beneath his maker’s hand, Then saw himself forsaken with nowhere he could stand. No Eve had shared his exile, no paradise was won, He envied even Satan, who never stood alone. (Bridge) The books had given language to everything he knew, But knowledge made the wound of his abandonment more true. He longed to be an Adam, beloved beneath the sky, Yet saw himself as Satan, cast out and asking why. (Outro) He closed the final pages as evening shadows came, Now knowing who had made him and who denied his claim. The innocent who wondered what place might be his own, Had learned that his creator had meant him to be alone.
