# THE NAME [Intro – male, East London, close mic, low-mid speaking voice; dry grain, clipped, confident] They used to say my old man owned the night. Not officially. Course not. Man knew his name. [Breath.] I knew his footsteps. Wanted to follow them. Didn't ask where they led. --- [Verse 1 – young, hungry East London cadence; faster pocket, sharp attacks, sly attitude] Dad came through late. Keys in the bowl. Rain on his coat. Smoke on his clothes. Mum went quiet when he walked through the door. He'd slap a wad on the table. “There's food now.” I thought that was power. New creps. Full fridge. Bills paid. Dad knew every face round these ends. “Safe, boss.” “Alright, bruv.” He barely spoke. Just looked. Man moved. I watched that. I learned that. --- [Pre-Chorus – speech-to-melody; downward scoop, delayed vowel] He said, “There's more than this.” [Low ghost] More... [Lead] I heard the money. Never heard the warning. --- [Chorus – clean melodic lift; chant-led, confident] I followed my father's footsteps, same rain, same street. He taught me how to carry money, never how to carry the grief. I wanted the crown. I wanted the name. Didn't know every step gets heavier when you play the same game. [Low shadow] Same game... --- [Verse 2 – quicker East London cadence; harder consonants, more attitude] Fifteen. I knew the slang. Seventeen. Man knew my face. Corner shop. Station. Back road. Same place. “Safe, little man.” Then a rival lot started testing the edges. Little comments. Big looks. Names getting mentioned. Dad said, “Leave it.” I said, “Safe.” [Small laugh.] Didn't. I liked being known. Liked the car. Liked the watch. Liked walking in and hearing, “Boss.” Then blue lights started showing up where they shouldn't. Sweeney asking questions. Old Bill waiting outside. Dad looked at me. Didn't shout. Just said, “Son... this ain't a game.” --- [Pre-Chorus 2 – faster, tense; words tighten, sudden stop] I heard, “Be careful.” What I heard was, “Get bigger.” [Dead stop.] That's when the road changed. --- [Chorus 2 – tighter, more aggressive] I followed my father's footsteps, same rain, same street. He taught me how to chase the money. I learned how fear tastes sweet. I wanted the crown. I wanted the name. But every room got colder when they knew me by the name. --- [Verse 3 – FAST double-time East London rap; compressed syllables, hard stops, attitude] Twenty-five. Now man's coming to me. “Boss, can you sort this?” “Boss, are we good?” Rival lot talking loud. My boys talking back. Phones jumping. Tempers rising. Everybody wants respect. Sweeney in the distance. Old Bill asking names. Blue lights on the wet road. I ain't talking big. I ain't saying much. Just, “Keep it calm.” But calm don't last when pride gets involved. One night... front door goes. Mum's name in my head. Dad's voice in my ear. “Son... don't become me.” [Hard breath.] Too late. --- [Bridge – stripped, low intimate; compressed breath-led delivery, sudden space] A week later... Dad disappeared. No goodbye. No speech. Just gone. Mum said, “Your dad loved you.” I said, “I know.” She said, “Then don't copy him.” [Breath.] But everybody was already calling. The crown was sitting there. And it had my name on it. --- [Verse 4 – controlled authority; brisk clipped bursts, less slang] Thirty-two. Now the room goes quiet before I even speak. Man don't say “mate.” They say, “Boss.” Rival lot keep watching. Sweeney still asking. Old Bill still circling. Money still comes. So does the fear. I got everything Dad said would get us out. House. Car. Keys. Respect. [Dry laugh.] And none of it feels like home. Then I see a kid watching me the way I watched my dad. Same hungry eyes. Same little smile. He wants the watch. The car. The name. [Pause.] I know exactly what he's seeing. --- [Build – whispered street fragments, accelerating] More. More. One more. Take the crown. Keep the name. [Rapid] Same road. Same rain. Same mistake. [Hard stop.] No. --- [Final Chorus – low opening, clean high lift; strongest attitude, layered low shadow and ghost] I followed my father's footsteps, same rain, same street. He taught me how to carry money. Now I know what it means to carry the heat. I wanted the crown. I wanted the name. But the man who gets the crown don't come out the same. [Low shadow] Not the same... [Lead – clean higher] Dad said, “There's more than this.” [Ghost] More... [Lead] Now I finally hear the warning. --- [Outro – close mic, exhausted, falling pitch] They used to say my old man owned the night. I thought that was the dream. [Pause.] Now some kid is watching me. And I know exactly what he thinks he sees.
