I wake up, brush teeth and hair, Put on the clothes I chose to wear. My shirt is soft, it’s loose and light, No cause yet for fight or flight. I see my shoes, my socks nearby, Yeah, scratch that, flip flops are fine. To the world outside I’m an enigma; They just can’t quite figure me out. I know this and I forgive them, Though they’ll rant and they will shout. Why do you ask so many questions? Why are you just so hard to read? Why do you always have to argue, And why won’t you just concede? Yet in this world so loud and brash, My thoughts like quiet streams. Flowing deep with wonder, Bursting forth in dreams. In colors more vivid, in details so fine, My mind a treasure trove uniquely mine. To the world outside I’m an enigma; They just can’t quite figure me out. I know this and I forgive them, Though they’ll rant and they will shout. Why do you ask so many questions? Why are you just so hard to read? Why do you always have to argue, And why won’t you just concede? I’m the chaos in this machine; I am the silence where the storm rages. They get upset when I see past them, To the patterns of the ages. I can’t help but make connections, And trace them in my mind. So many patterns in the tangle, That I am able to unwind. Somewhere back in history, Somewhere long before my time, A group of men gave me a label, Based on the strangeness of my mind. They determined those like me were broken; This mythology haunts us still. It’s a sad forgone conclusion That for most, it always will. To the world outside I’m an enigma; They just can’t quite figure me out. I know this and I forgive them, Though they’ll rant and they will shout. Why do you ask so many questions? Why are you just so hard to read? Why do you always have to argue, And why won’t you just concede? But in this label, I find no sorrow, For I’ve seen what they cannot see. I dance to beats they cannot hear, In a world that lets me be. Yes, they see disorder; I see endless range, And in my mind, I see no reason I should change.
