[Verse 1 – “The Count”] Forty-five million whispered ghosts, they say the leading cause of death is choices we don’t talk about. Some thank God the numbers fall, say the planet’s overrun, others watch the cradle empty, wondering where the children have gone. Thanos jokes and broken hopes, “what happens when the world can’t hold us?" Nature moves in patterns old, and the smallest human tremor shifts the whole of us. [Pre-Chorus 1] Some say we got selfish, some say we got poor, some say we lost the tribe we used to raise each other for. Some say the cost is killing love, and some say love just costs too much. [Chorus] Birthgap — everybody’s telling different stories. Birthgap — every reason pulls a different weight. Birthgap — between the dream and the day we live in, the empty swing keeps swinging in the space we never make. [Verse 2 – “The Price”] “I love kids, I’d have more — but damn, it’s too expensive just to keep the lights on.” “Two parents working full-time now, and daycare costs a half a life.” “In the fifties they handed out houses, now we rent our future by the month.” Comfort numbs us, struggle births us — or so an old voice sighs. But the youth are buried in degrees and debt, and time runs out before they’re “ready yet.” [Pre-Chorus 2] Some blame the bosses, some blame the banks, some blame the pills, the courts, the tanks. Some point at feminism, some at men, some say “it’s all the system” and they’d start over again. [Chorus] Birthgap — everybody’s fighting over reasons. Birthgap — every motive casts a different shade. Birthgap — we built our lives on burning hours, and wonder why the seeds don’t grow in soil we never made. [Verse 3 – “The Clock”] Asia works itself to death — karoshi, gwarosa carved in stone. Robots rise to take the jobs, but robots never pay a tax. Cities crumble, elders lonely, schoolyards echo with the past. The mothers who could not conceive, the mothers who wished they could, and the mothers told to hurry up before their bodies close the doors. Some don’t want children in a world of fires, floods, and wars. [Bridge – Voices Collide] “It's all feminism.” “It’s all men.” “It’s all money.” “It’s all sin.” “It’s the climate.” “It’s the market.” “It’s the lies we were sold back then.” “No jobs.” “No homes.” “No partners.” “No help.” “No future.” “No trust in ourselves.” A thousand fingers point the blame — but everyone says the same thing underneath: “We’re scared.” [Chorus – Full] Birthgap — a map of all our contradictions. Birthgap — an echo of the fears we never name. Birthgap — a hymn of hopes we keep postponing, ’til the cradle and the pension both are playing the same game. [Verse 4 – “The Choice”] Some say: “Don’t guilt the young; the crisis is man-made.” Some say: “It’s nature’s plan; decline is just a phase.” Some say: “Extinction might be noble — humans had their chance.” Some whisper that religion kept the bonds we’ve since unfastened. Some beg for tribe and hearth again — a village full of helpful hands. Some just want a fairer world before inviting in new life. And some who never chose their fate still feel the hollow in the night. [Chorus – Final] Birthgap — every person has a story. Birthgap — no single truth can carry all the weight. Birthgap — a fragile chord between tomorrow and the price of choosing love inside a complicated age. [Outro – “The Echo”] Apathy, uncertainty, a world too loud, too fast, too bare. But still the ancient longing hums — to plant a seed, to build a home, to leave a trace that says we cared. Some will choose it, some will not. Both deserve their peace. And still the empty swing keeps moving to the rhythm of a thousand mixed beliefs. Birthgap… Birthgap… The silence in the nursery belongs to all of us.
