[Verse 1] Valerie Noakes, take my hand The guardhouse smells like iron and sand Three hard voices, day and night Kept your shadow out of sight Dirty red and ashen black You wore the world that held you back On a desk where the swindlers grin You forgot where your name had been [Pre-Chorus] Then a gentle knock On your weary door A softer voice Than you'd known before A quiet touch A breath of calm A little rest Like a healing balm [Chorus] Green, green, let it grow Valerie, let it go Green, green, on your skin Step out now, step back in Green, green, let it shine Valerie is free tonight (Not the gang) not the chain You are coming home again [Verse 2] They led you through a velvet gate To a room that felt like rain Like bathing in a woodland pool Silver water, fresh and cool You untangled every knot With a comb and careful hand Braids like ropes of moonlit silk Falling where they softly flow [Pre-Chorus] Two green ribbons tied With a jewel-like sparkle Traffic-light bright In the street dark A wardrobe opened Soft and clean All in shades Of living green [Chorus] Green, green, let it grow Valerie, let it go Green, green, on your skin Step out now, step back in Green, green, on your feet Leather brogues and polished seams (Not the gang) not the chain You are coming home again [Bridge] And when you smiled The room went still Compassion, love And steady will You touched that green And found your voice No more the prisoner Only free choice [Final Chorus] Green, green, let it grow Valerie, let it go Green, green, in the sun What was broken, a new moon. Green, green, on your skin Valerie, begin again (Not the gang) not the chain You are coming home again
