Good News Travels Upstairs

[Verse 1] She got the job and called her sister Then knocked on every door along our floor We found some cups and orange juice And someone brought a cake from the corner store The neighbor with the quiet little dog Put a record on and took his slippers off [Pre-Chorus] Nothing fancy, nothing planned Just a good thing passing hand to hand [Chorus] Good news travels upstairs Somebody's happy and we all get a share One little yes in a long hard year Let it ring a little longer here Good news travels upstairs Open the door, pull another chair There's enough of the feeling to go around Good news makes a good night out [Verse 2] A kid made signs on scraps of paper His letters crossed the margins everywhere She stuck one right above the kettle Said she'd look at it before her first day there We talked until the hall went dim And everyone took extra cake back in [Pre-Chorus] Nothing fancy, nothing planned Just a good thing passing hand to hand [Chorus] Good news travels upstairs Somebody's happy and we all get a share One little yes in a long hard year Let it ring a little longer here Good news travels upstairs Open the door, pull another chair There's enough of the feeling to go around Good news makes a good night out [Bridge - intimate solo vocal, piano and strings] We don't always know our neighbors Till somebody gives us a reason I like the people in this building More now that I know their names [Instrumental interlude - orchestra and rhythm section, no vocals] [Final Chorus] Good news travels upstairs Somebody's happy and we all get a share One little yes in a long hard year Let it ring a little longer here Good news travels upstairs Open the door, pull another chair There's enough of the feeling to go around Good news makes a good night out [Outro] Pull another chair We've got good news to share
