[Verse 1] You left your blue coat by the kitchen chair A paper train ticket folded in the pocket there The kettle cooled beside the morning post I read your careful note and held it close [Chorus] Come back when the apples fall Come back when the old bell calls I’ll leave the garden gate unlatched And keep one place beside the glass [Verse 2] The neighbour’s radio played through the wall A summer match, then rain against it all I found your photograph beneath the stairs Two younger faces looking free of cares [Chorus] Come back when the apples fall Come back when the old bell calls I’ll leave the garden gate unlatched And keep one place beside the glass [Bridge] If the road has taken more than we could know There are quiet ways for two hearts to grow No grand promise, no borrowed phrase Just your hand returning through the ordinary days [Final Chorus] Come back when the apples fall Come back when the old bell calls The evening settles soft and vast And every door remembers us at last [Outro] I’ll leave the garden gate unlatched And keep one place beside the glass
