The Broken Way Forward
[Narrator, male, warm storyteller] The road grew rough beyond the fields, Where stone met broken ground. The hills no longer rolled with ease— They cracked and split around. And every path that should have led To simple travel through… Instead became a question mark No one quite knew what to do. [Heroes, male group, structured chant] The path has been obstructed! The trial now begins! We face the world’s resistance To test what lies within! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] It’s a broken bridge. [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] A bridge hung half above the stream, Its ropes worn thin with age. A simple structure meant to cross A narrow canyon’s stage. Steve crouched beside it briefly, Then looked back up the trail. [Steve, male, concerned, humble] We can just go around it. [Heroes, male group, confident ritual chant] NO PATH IS EVER SIMPLE! ALL OBSTACLES ARE SIGN! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] It’s literally a shortcut bridge. [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] And so they gathered ropes and wood, With grave heroic care. Transforming broken wooden beams Into a “ritual repair.” Steve watched them overthinking Every knot and tie— While the actual crossing route Lay plainly on the side. [Steve, male, concerned, humble] We could just walk around. [Hero, male, confident] The bridge chooses who may pass! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] No it doesn’t. [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] But still they worked with ceremony, Strain and solemn tone. As if a basic infrastructure Were something overgrown. The bodhrán beat grew heavier now, Less travel, more insist. Each hammer strike upon the wood A rhythmic “we insist.” [Heroes, male group, chanting rhythm increasing] We bind the wood! We seal the fate! We strengthen what was weak! The bridge shall judge our worthiness! Before we cross the creek! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] It’s just wood. [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] The bridge, eventually repaired, Still swayed just like before. But now it bore a sacred name No bridge had borne before. [Hero, male, proud] The Bridge of Trial is complete! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] We fixed a bridge. [Heroes, male group, triumphant chant] WE HAVE CONQUERED STRUCTURE! [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] And Steve began to understand A pattern forming here: The world was not the problem now— Their confidence was clear. For every simple thing they met Was turned into a sign… And Steve was slowly learning He was the only one aligned. [Steve, male, concerned, humble] You know we could’ve just walked around that. [Hero, male, confident] And deny the bridge its destiny? [Steve, male, concerned, humble] Yes. [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] They paused, considered briefly… Then nodded, unconcerned. For once a path had been improved— So clearly it was earned. [Final Chorus, male group, tense but melodic] No road is ever simple! No obstacle is plain! Each broken thing is waiting For meaning we can name! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] It’s just a bridge. [Heroes, male group, chanting louder] IT IS A TEST OF BRIDGES! [Narrator, male, warm storyteller] And somewhere in that crossing Between reason and belief… Steve stopped trying to correct them And just accepted grief. [Steve, male, concerned, humble] I’m not fixing another one of these. [Heroes, male group, fading forward] FORWARD! [Steve, male, concerned, humble] I’m starting to think the hills were quieter.
