FIVE AT THE TABLE Funny... Used to be just the two of us. Now look at this place. Six years old, got a plan for the day She's got the whole damn house running her way Four years old, got a dinosaur roar Shaking all the pictures hanging up on the wall Two years old, dropping food on the floor Laughing when I tell her, "Baby, no more" Three little hurricanes tearing through the room Wouldn't trade the noise for a minute of peace Crayons on the table, fingerprints on glass Little shoes in the hallway, growing up too fast You say, "Baby, could you get 'em to sit?" I say, "I'm trying," while the smallest throws a fit Then I catch you laughing with your head in your hands Same girl who put her keys right next to mine back then A little more tired, but beautiful to me I just wish we had a minute to breathe I remember when this room Was just a place for me and you Now there's a hundred little reasons Why there's nothing I'd rather do Five at the table Three little hearts and me and you Got everything we prayed for Never knew how much a house could hold Five at the table Little hands reaching for mine Ain't a thing about this life that's perfect But God, it looks beautiful tonight Oh, oh, oh Look what we made Oh, oh, oh Five at the table today There's a drawing on the fridge With five crooked little faces And a sun up in the corner Shining down on all our places There's a pile of tiny socks I swear multiplies at night And somebody's always crying When we finally turn out the lights You got coffee going cold I got dishes in the sink We used to talk for hours Now we barely get to think The oldest wants another story Middle one's got something to say And the baby's reaching both her arms up Like I ain't held her once today So I pick her up and spin her Hear her laughing in my ear Never knew a little sound Could make the whole world disappear I remember when this room Was just a place for me and you Now there's a hundred little reasons Why there's nothing I'd rather do Five at the table Three little hearts and me and you Got everything we prayed for Never knew how much a house could hold Five at the table Little hands reaching for mine Ain't a thing about this life that's perfect But God, it looks beautiful tonight Oh, oh, oh Look what we made Oh, oh, oh Five at the table today You know... I used to think a good life Was having everything I wanted. Turns out it's having three little girls Who want everything from me. Now the plates are in the kitchen And the little ones are sleeping Three nightlights down the hallway And the house is finally breathing You're folding clothes beside me I'm staring at the wall We say we're tired, say goodnight Don't say much else at all And I remember how you held me Before we had this life I wonder if you miss those days Or if they're only on my mind Five at the table Three little hearts and me and you Got everything we prayed for Never knew how much a house could hold Five at the table Little hands reaching for mine Ain't a thing about this life that's perfect But God, it looks beautiful tonight Oh, oh, oh Look what we made Oh, oh, oh Five at the table today Six... Four... Two... Man, they're growing up fast. Hey, baby... Never mind.
