Everything Else

If I could offer you one piece of advice for the years ahead... I'd tell you to keep showing up. Everything else... I've only learned by watching ordinary people do extraordinary things without ever believing they were extraordinary. Don't be surprised when your knees remind you how old you are. Be grateful they carried you this far. Take more pictures. Not because you'll post them... because one day they'll introduce you to someone you used to know. The music wasn't better because it came from vinyl. It was better because your friends were in the room when it played. The world will continue convincing you that everything is urgent. Very little actually is. Wave to your neighbours. You'll eventually need each other. Then continue weaving observations. You'll spend years trying to organize your life. Then discover your favourite memories were rarely planned. The gadgets will become smaller. The moments worth remembering won't. You'll eventually stop wondering where all the good people went. You'll realize they were beside you all along. Don't confuse being connected with being close. Be patient with younger generations. They're inheriting a world they didn't design. Be patient with older generations. They're leaving behind one they spent a lifetime building. If someone tells the same story twice... listen twice. One day you'll hope someone does the same for you. You'll lose people. You'll gain perspective. Neither happens when you expect it. Toward the end, the emotional lift. One morning you'll notice your favourite songs have become classics. One afternoon you'll realize your children quote you. One evening you'll understand your parents were improvising too. That isn't disappointing. It's comforting. Because none of us were ever meant to have all the answers. Only enough hope... to leave the world a little gentler than we found it. And I'd close with something like this. So... Keep showing up. Hold the door. Take the long drive. Watch the sunset when you can. Tell people what they meant to you before the eulogy. Laugh loudly. Apologize quickly. Forgive slowly. Plant something whose shade you'll never sit beneath. Listen more than you interrupt. Remember names. Keep a few handwritten notes. Dance anyway. And when the years begin to feel faster than the days... don't count how much time you've lost. Count how many people still smile when you walk into the room. Everything else... well... we're all still figuring it out together.
