It was a chilly night in December The holidays had not yet peaked I traded my warm apartment For the cold and lonely street. My breath looked like I was smoking With no cigarette in hand When I spied another creature Disguised as a lonely man. At first we acted nonchalant. Till the attraction grew Imagine my surprise When I discovered it was you. Then suddenly I noticed The silver streets turn gold And we were never strangers Just two kids who had gotten old. Loneliness can be contagious Especially on holidays So when two people find each other It touches in many ways. All I want is to be touched by you To feel your breath on mine To feel the warmth of someone’s skin But only when it’s time. We darted in a small café Ordered coffee with a shot And split a giant brownie With ice cream on the top. We decided we’d go walking— Just check out the lights, not shop— Spotted things we liked in common Knitted scarves with matching top. Roller-bladers caught our attention They made it look so fun. “I’ll watch if you want to try it I’d likely break my buns.” We continued past the liveliness To a place the crowds passed by I said, “I’d like to kiss you”, Just to see what you’d reply. Loneliness can be contagious Especially on holidays So when two people find each other It touches in many ways. All I want is to be touched by you To feel your breath on mine To feel the warmth of someone’s skin But only when it’s time. We turned the street to your place The only lights were moon and stars I pointed out a red one Explaining—“that one’s Mars”. One more block, a flight of stairs A little kiss goodnight I didn’t really want to go But it felt only right. I raised my heavy collar Tightened the scarf around my neck And started down the stairwell When you said—“What the heck. Loneliness can be contagious Especially on holidays So when two people find each other It touches in many ways. All I want is to be touched by you To feel your breath on mine To feel the warmth of someone’s skin But only when it’s time.” I looked up and said———It’s time.
