The Jersey Devil
[Verse 1] Leeds Point vanished from the signs. Couldn't tell you where I'd been. Then that lantern split the pines, And the trees closed in again. Same old doorway. Same old light. Same old hat behind the pane. Tried to put the car in reverse. Reached to park the thing again. Walked in shaking, jaw clenched tight. Dropped his magazine. "Take your fucking stories back. Tell me what this means." He just opened up a trapdoor. Lifted it without a sound. "Come along. You've seen the stories. Time to see what lies beneath the ground." [Chorus] Something's wrong inside the mirror. Something's standing in my place. Every second brings it nearer Where I ought to see my face. Every mile I thought I'd driven, Every turn I tried to fight, Brought me here to meet the Devil On the other side. [Verse 2] Rusted stairs and concrete walls. Copper coils around a frame. Dead lights hanging down the halls. Maps with dates beside the names. Stacks of stories, cracked equipment. Dust on every cord and dial. Then he stopped beside the silver. Held my gaze and gave that smile. I could see the room reflected. Every cable. Every chair. But the old man at my shoulder Had no double standing there. [Verse 3] Then two horns above my head. Then two wings against the wall. Eyes that caught the warning red. Something crooked. Something tall. Raised my hand. It matched the motion. Lowered mine. It kept it raised. Held my breath. Its chest kept moving. Tried to turn. It held my gaze. I stepped back. It stepped toward me. Claws unfolded, long and black. Tried to run. My feet ignored me. Moved ahead while I pulled back. [Chorus] Something's wrong inside the mirror. Something's standing in my place. Every second brings it nearer Where I ought to see my face. Every mile I thought I'd driven, Every turn I tried to fight, Brought me here to meet the Devil On the other side. [Instrumental] [Bridge] "Old man, tell me what you're doing!" "Making sure the tale gets told." Felt my arm extend before me. Felt my fingers turning cold. Palm against a freezing surface. Claws against the other side. Then the silver bent between us, And it pulled me through the light. No floor. No air. No sense of falling. Years went rushing through the black. Tried to scream and heard him calling. Couldn't find the doorway back. [Verse 4] Woke to concrete cold as stone. Thought the nightmare must be through. Reached beneath me, felt the floor, Saw the claws and somehow knew. Something heavy scraped behind me. Something struck the copper frame. Tried to stand. My legs bent backward. Nothing moved or felt the same. Tried to ask him what he'd done. Only shrieked until it hurt. Watched him straighten up the papers, Brush his sleeve and check his shirt. [Final Chorus] Something moved inside the mirror. Now it's staring from my place. Every second makes it clearer: That's no mask upon my face. Every mile was his decision. Every page prepared the lie. I was never being hunted. He was bringing me inside. I'm the voice behind the screaming. I'm the man behind these eyes. Let me wake and find I'm dreaming. Let me wake on either side. [Outro] He opened up the magazine. His finger marked a date. I tried to say, "I'm still in here." He said, "You're running late."
