Evermore – Part VIII: A Message from Afar
To experience the full story, I invite you to begin with Part I. The other chapters are available in the playlist Evermore – The Contemporary Aria. This story is a work of fiction. To be continued… —————————————————— Act I: Wednesday Evening · Skynet News Studio The evening news is live. The news anchor (the heroine) sits beside her co-anchor at the desk, her tone steady, precise, professional. The screen cuts—to a disaster zone ravaged by earthquake and tsunami. The storm has not passed. Rubble stretches as far as the eye can see. A man stands beyond the security line—wearing protective gear, a transparent raincoat clinging to his shoulders, rubber boots submerged in pooled water. He faces the camera. The microphone hangs against his chest. ——— *Field Reporter (Male Lead): “Since the tsunami struck, this area has endured relentless rain and wind for three days and three nights, significantly complicating rescue and recovery efforts…” ——— His voice travels through the screen and into the studio. The heroine’s gaze lingers. She looks at the monitor. A mask covers half of the reporter’s face. The camera slowly tightens its frame. His eyes come clearly into view. In that instant, something in her stirs—quietly. She drifts for a few seconds, silent, distant. ——— *Co-Anchor (slightly louder, continuing the broadcast): “We will continue to follow developments as they unfold.” ——— The sound pulls her back. She refocuses, aligns herself with the camera once more. The two anchors move in seamless rhythm—measured voices, flawless timing. The evening news concludes as usual. ——— ——— Act II: After the Broadcast · Newsroom Office Night has settled. Only the cold glow of computer screens remains. The heroine sits at her desk, hands resting above the keyboard, her breathing slowly steadies. *Heroine: That voice— so familiar, as if I have heard it somewhere before. Those eyes, that look— they seem so familiar. ——— Her tired eyes focus slightly. A melody she heard not long ago—from a radio—begins to echo again in her mind. *Radio Song — Just Reach Out Your Hand There is a place where the road comes to an end, where the map stops and leaves no mark behind. Windows shattered, names washed away by rain, night forgetting what daylight was meant to be. No one counts the hours here, no one asks why— only hands still moving, beneath an unsettled sky. So I stand where the storm is loudest, on ground that never promises peace. I do not need to be remembered, I only need to reach out my hands— to touch each fragile life, to lift what little hope remains. Let the sirens slowly turn to rain, let morning come when it is meant to come. Someone must stay awake, when the world is breaking in their hands. There is no glory in waiting, no graceful ending in the dark. Only a light that has not gone out yet, only a body finishing its part. If truth is all I have left to carry, then I will carry it alone. Not to be seen, not to be saved— only to find my way back to where I belong. So I stand where the storm is loudest, on ground that never promises peace. I do not need to be remembered, I only need to reach out my hand— to touch each fragile life, to lift what little hope remains. Let the sirens slowly turn to rain, let morning come when it is meant to come. Someone must stay awake, when the world is breaking in hands. When tomorrow’s noise fades away, when the streets forget my name, perhaps no one will remember my cry— for now, just reach out your hand. … For now, just reach out your hand— ——— As the song dissolves in her mind, the heroine suddenly remembers something. She picks up her phone. And begins to dial… ————————————————— These lyrics are written and owned by Rachel’s Original (Rachel Liu). Please do not copy, share, or adapt them without permission.
