[Verse 1] You keep your flowers in a crystal jar Cut the stems to make them fit Every petal looks like borrowed stars Till you notice where they split You chase the daylight like you’re chasing grace But every window gathers dust Even sunlight leaves a shadowed trace Every promise holds some rust [Chorus] There’s rust on the rose you’re holding Little cracks in the glass you love Every perfect thing comes broken From the dirt it’s dreaming of You want a world that never changes But the wound is where it glows Beauty only blooms with danger There’s rust There’s rust on the rose [Verse 2] You fold your letters in a careful stack Hide the ink that bled and ran Every word you wish you could take back Still is written in your hands You paint your face like it could hide the years But the mirror won’t pretend Even laughter has its quiet tears Every start leans toward an end [Chorus] There’s rust on the rose you’re holding Little cracks in the glass you love Every perfect thing comes broken From the dirt it’s dreaming of You want a world that never changes But the wound is where it glows Beauty only blooms with danger There’s rust There’s rust on the rose [Bridge] So come undone Let it stain your skin Let the garden overgrow Let the dark seep in You’re not ruined You’re just growing through Every flaw that cuts you open Shows the brightest part of you [Chorus] There’s rust on the rose you’re holding Little cracks in the glass you love Every perfect thing comes broken From the dirt it’s dreaming of You want a heart that never wavers But the bruise is where it shows Love is only real with failure There’s rust There’s rust on the rose
