Chapter VIII: An Oath Fulfilled

V5

When morning reached the mountain gate, No roar arose beneath the stone. The smoke withdrew from ruined halls, The ancient fire no longer shone. We followed ash through shattered doors, Past broken vows of fallen kings. No voice remained to call us home, No hand remained to claim the blade. There, where blood and fire had met, The wyrm lay cold, its eyes were dead. And at its heart, with Grimbane drawn, We found the one who carried on. An oath fulfilled, a life laid down, No throne was claimed, no victor crowned. The wyrm lies still beneath the stone, He faced the flame and died alone. Raise no banner, sound no horn, Let grief and glory share the dawn. The mountain’s heart is ours once more, But he shall never cross its door. His armor burned, his lifeblood spilled, One hand still closed around the hilt. The runes were fading one by one, As if the blade itself could grieve. We searched his cloak, we searched his shield, No crest remained, no name was found. A stranger called by ancient steel, Now sleeping in our sacred ground. The dead who watched him take the path Stood silent in the dying flame. Their spectral ranks bowed low at last, And passed beyond the halls of shame. He did not ask to bear our pain. Yet still he bore it to the end. He did not live to wear a crown. Then let no lesser head pretend. Though none can speak the name he bore, The mountain knows and shall remember. His blood has sealed the oath of old. His soul has passed beyond the ember. An oath fulfilled, a life laid down, No throne was claimed, no victor crowned. The wyrm lies still beneath the stone, Yet now his spirit walks with our own. Raise the banner, sound the horn, Let grief and glory greet the dawn. The mountain’s heart is ours once more, His sacrifice shall guard its door. An oath fulfilled! The flame is gone! Through blood and stone, His deed lives on! An oath fulfilled! Let ages know: One stood alone Where none would go!
