The Transfer of Pain

She sat on the concrete, 110 heat, Inking her story, no shoes on her feet. Two backpacks and pajamas for clothes, Eyes full of pain, the kind no one knows. She looked up and said, “Hi,” with a smile, I said, “Hi" back, but walked past in denial... Inside the store, couldn’t shake her face, So out of place in a heartless place. So young, so lost, but something shined, A quiet spark the world left behind. As I left, she looked again my way, Softly said, “Have a nice day.” Though she smiled, it wasn’t the same… That’s when her pain… transferred its name. The transfer of pain, now it lives in me, A stranger’s hurt I didn’t foresee. Gave her a few dollars, said, “Good luck, okay?” But was that enough... to help her today? I asked what happened, she just said, “Lost my job.” But I know there's more to her story behind that sob. I wanted to help, but where do I start? There are thousands like her… but she pierced my heart. I tell myself I can’t save them all, But the transfers of pain… do I answer the call? Do I go back? Will she still be there? Life’s not fair, some fall through thin air. She gave me this song, a burden to share… I don’t know her story, just the weight she wears. We shape our paths, that much is true, But not all pain is something we choose. She crossed my heart and left her flame, A transfer of pain… with no one to blame.
