The Last Candle Girl #TrickOrTreat
This took too much to make. Please enjoy and tell me what you think! [Verse 1] The house sinks a little every year. The floors lean toward the hearth. I carry candles from room to room, keep them breathing while the walls flake apart. Wax clings to my fingers— I peel, re-form, begin again. No one tells me to, but the dark waits— I don’t like how it looks when it wins. [Verse 2] At first, there were others. We took turns with the flames. They left when the mirrors went blank— turned away and ran. I stayed. Someone has to keep the light even. It hums when it’s right, a small, wet heartbeat. I listen for that. [Chorus] If the flame dies, the house folds in. If the wax runs out, the voices begin. So I work— I melt, I pour, I press, I breathe— ’til the shape holds, ’til the shape holds. [Verse] My arms shine now, thin and pale. When I move too fast, they bend. I smell of tallow and dust. The light eats quietly—polite, but hungry. Sometimes it climbs higher than it should. That’s when I give it more of me, just enough to settle it down. [Chorus] If the flame dies, the house folds in. If the wax runs out, the voices begin. So I work— I melt, I pour, I press, I breathe— ’til the shape holds, ’til the shape holds. [Bridge] The rooms are smaller now. Heat has its own gravity. It pushed me tight I try not to stumble for When the last candle gutters, the ceiling will fall. I’ll be the last light— I’ll go quiet through it all. [Final Verse] The wax climbs up my throat. I taste smoke when I speak. The floor glows under me, a pool pretending to be gold. I keep my hands steady, eyes open ’til the glass turns black. That’s the work. That’s what’s left. [Chorus] Oh the flame died, the house folds in. The wax ran out and the voices begin. So I speak— I mourn, I weep, I cry, I tried, I plea, I die— ’til the shape holds, —I breathe— [Outro]
