The Captain Lost His Hat (remix) 1.2

[Verse 1]
The captain stood upon the deck,
With boots as black as coal,
He raised one hand to greet the wind,
And shouted, “Steady, boys!”

But then a gust came from the west,
And caught him unaware,
It lifted up his finest hat
And tossed it through the air.

[Chorus]
[Big Pub Singalong]
[Male Group Vocals]
[Call and Response]
[Rowdy but Tuneful]
The captain lost his hat!
The captain lost his hat!
It flew across the starboard side,
And nobody brought it back!

He cursed the wind,
He cursed the sea,
He cursed the ship and crew,
But somewhere on the rolling waves
His hat was sailing too!

[Instrumental Break]
[Fiddle and Whistle]
[Handclaps]

[Verse 2]
The bosun grabbed a fishing net,
The cook ran for a rope,
The cabin boy leaned far too far,
Still full of foolish hope.

The first mate yelled, “Forget the thing!”
The captain shouted, “NO!”
“That hat has crossed three dozen seas,
And everywhere I go!”

[Chorus]
The captain lost his hat!
The captain lost his hat!
It danced above the foaming waves,
Then vanished just like that!

He cursed the wind,
He cursed the sea,
He cursed the morning sky,
And swore he saw the blasted thing
Go sailing proudly by!

[Short Instrumental]
[Concertina and Fiddle]

[Bridge]
Then just before the evening bell,
A gull came wheeling round,
And perched upon the mizzenmast
With something it had found.

The crew looked up.
The captain froze.
The gull gave one loud cry.

Upon its head, as bold as brass,
The captain’s hat sat high!

[Final Chorus]
The captain found his hat!
Well, nearly found his hat!
The gull looked down upon the deck
And wouldn’t give it back!

So raise your cups
And drink tonight
To every sailor’s plight,
The captain lost his dignity...

But the gull looked grand all night!

[Outro]
[Full Ensemble]
[Gang Vocals]
[Shouted "HEY!"]
[Fast Hornpipe Outro]
[Full Ensemble Hornpipe]
[Group Shouts: “HEY!”]
[Fast Fiddle and Whistle]
[Hard Final Chord]
