Growing Old Ain’t Losing the Race

Back when my legs could carry me all day long After going door-to-door my body still felt strong Didn’t think twice ‘bout climbing every stair Now I pause halfway just to catch some air Still awake at midnight, then up at 5 o'clock Working all weekend building Kingdom Halls twice a month Thought those busy days would never end Funny how the body stops before the mind gives in Used to lift my children high above my head Now, when my knees misstep they steady me instead Names come slower than they used to do But I still remember every smile I knew Some old friends are photographs in dusty frames Some chat on Zoom though we ain’t quite the same We trade stories ‘bout medicines and pain Then laugh like young guys all over again Time keeps changing all the rules somehow The mirror tells the truth I can’t outrun now But every morning sunlight finds my door And I know the Truth's worth living for I move slower but I see much more I keep my eyes on the prize that's in store A cool evening breeze, a hand held tight The kindness in my brother's eyes Growing old ain’t losing the race It’s learning mercy and grace Though the road grows narrow near the end I still wake up thankful for another day again I'll see you in Paradise
