A Small, True Mercy

[Verse 1] You saw the boy drop oranges in the rain And stopped your bike before the cars rolled through You picked them up; he laughed at his own hands You laughed with him, and let the moment mend [Pre-Chorus] A gentle word can alter what comes next A little patience steadies someone's day [Chorus] Kindness is a strength we choose to give A way of saying, you are not alone It asks for nothing, still it changes things A small, true mercy travels farther on [Verse 2] You let the tired cashier finish her thought Though all the numbers blurred beneath her eyes You met her gaze, said, take the time you need She stood a little taller when you smiled [Pre-Chorus] A gentle word can alter what comes next A little patience steadies someone's day [Chorus] Kindness is a strength we choose to give A way of saying, you are not alone It asks for nothing, still it changes things A small, true mercy travels farther on [Bridge] And when the hard day finds you in its grip May someone see the weight you never name May care return in ways you can't predict And warm the part that thought it had to wait [Final Chorus] Kindness is a strength we choose to give A way of saying, you are not alone It asks for nothing, still it changes things A small, true mercy travels farther on [Outro] You are not alone A small, true mercy travels on
