No politics or slogans, just a tender poem by a Ukrainian poet from the city of Bakhmut, my birthplace, which was completely destroyed in 2022. The poem is by Mykola Chernyavskyi (1868–1938), a victim of Stalinist terror, executed at the age of 71, whose works were banned. At one point in his life, he destroyed his poems written in Russian and began writing in Ukrainian. __________ Gently rocking in the blue sea, Twinkling stars, As if bathing in the sparkling waves, A flying swarm of lights. The cliffs rise, still restless, Dark and leaning. Somewhere in the black mountains, a light glows… And slowly fades. Can you hear the song over the quiet sea, In the blue expanse? Listen — there it calls again… And suddenly bursts forth… A boat appears, rocking on the waves, Far away, beyond the horizon. Who, unlucky, wants to catch Fate in their nets? Gently bathing in the blue sea, Twinkling stars; The foam rocks quietly, soft and white, Pure as snow. A distant song barely reaches, As if it pauses… Grant him, O Lord, on this beautiful night, A happy fate!
