[Verse 1] He came up hard On a broken street Carrying more Than a boy should keep Sharp little wounds In a coat of shame Every old bruise Still knew his name [Pre-Chorus] But time can bend What pain intends A wounded heart Can learn to mend He looked back once Then turned his face Toward the place That changed his place [Chorus] Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us He turned that scar Into a way to love us Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us Back to the fire He went and changed the whole country [Verse 2] He sat with kids Who shook with fear And heard the truth They'd hidden for years He did not flinch At what he knew He held their stories Like they were true [Pre-Chorus] No bitter hand Could close his eyes He saw the child Behind the lies He chose the road The hard, the clean Where mercy walks Through what has been [Chorus] Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us He turned that scar Into a way to love us Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us Back to the fire He went and changed the whole country [Bridge] He went where it hurt And stood his ground Right in the bones Of that old town Not for revenge Not for a crown But to lift the ones The world let down [Final Chorus] Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us He turned that scar Into a way to love us Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us Back to the fire He went and changed the whole country Our past don't own us Our past don't rule us He gave them hope And made a future out of rubble
