So. We have desert. A LOT of desert. One third of the entire land surface of this planet. [LAUGH TRACK: ha ha ha. yes. sand. we know. very hot. very empty. ha ha ha.] Inert. Useless. Just sitting there being dry and vast and ignored. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA. the laugh of people who have never once asked what sand IS made of.] Silicon dioxide. SILICON. The same material in every computer chip. Every solar panel. Every piece of glass you have ever looked through at the world you decided was too hard to fix. [LAUGH TRACK: ha... ha. slowing already. something landed sideways.] You can take that sand. That nothing. That hot useless criminal nothing — and hit it with concentrated solar energy. SUNLIGHT. Which the desert has. In CATASTROPHIC abundance. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA. relief. science fair energy. we like renewable. clap clap. HA HA HA.] And you can SINTER it. Fuse it. Layer by layer. Geometry by geometry. [LAUGH TRACK: geometry. ha. sure. the sand geometry man. ha ha.] Into BRICK. Into TILE. Into LOAD BEARING STRUCTURE. Into CITY. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA. city FROM sand. that's adorable. that's insane. HA HA HA.] We called ours Azrael. Fifty meters tall. Hexapod. Solar Fresnel array on the back like a crown made of captured fire. [LAUGH TRACK: ha ha ha. the giant hexapod sand city builder. very reasonable. very normal proposal. HA HA HA.] Walks into a dead zone. Scans the substrate. Calculates the water table. Begins. Phase one — ground preparation and foundation sintering. Phase two — structural grid and shelter emergence. Phase three — full living system integration. Water. Power. Food. Shade. Life. [LAUGH TRACK: getting quieter. one person stopped laughing. they're doing math in their head.] From NOTHING. From HOT CRIMINAL NOTHING. [LAUGH TRACK: HA. just HA. the button presser is distracted now. thinking.] And here is the part where it gets COSMICALLY funny — [LAUGH TRACK: perks up. oh good. funny. we like funny. HA HA HA.] This works on the Moon. [LAUGH TRACK: ha ha ha. the moon. sure. classic.] Lunar regolith is FORTY FIVE PERCENT silicon dioxide. Sintering works in vacuum. No atmosphere required. Concentrated solar still functions. You can print a moon base with the moon itself. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA HA HA. moon base. moon PRINTER. using MOON SAND. this is insane. HA HA HA.] It works on Mars. Martian soil. Similar composition. Similar solar availability at scale. Similar vacuum sintering viability. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA. okay okay okay. the sand guy wants to build on Mars too. sure. sure. HA HA HA.] Earth. Moon. Mars. One technology. One Titan. One hexapod crown of captured fire walking across the dead places of three worlds building life where there was nothing. [LAUGH TRACK: silence. genuine silence. the button gets pressed. nothing comes out. the machine is thinking.] And we. WE. [LAUGH TRACK: ha? tentative. worried about where this is going.] Stopped looking up. [LAUGH TRACK: ha. quieter.] Not organically. Not because we got bored. Not because the stars got less interesting. [LAUGH TRACK: ha... the presser's hand is barely on the button now.] It was ENGINEERED. Carefully. Deliberately. Profitably. A device placed in every hand specifically sized and weighted and luminance-tuned to capture the eyes that used to scan the horizon. [LAUGH TRACK: silence where the laugh track was. just silence. one person coughs.] The same eyes that looked at the Sahara and saw a city waiting. The same eyes that looked at the Moon and saw a foundation. The same eyes that looked at Mars and said — yeah. yeah we could. [LAUGH TRACK: does not fire.] Pointed. Down. At an argument. About nothing. Algorithmically selected to be just interesting enough that you don't put it down. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA HA HA — erupts suddenly — unhinged — too loud — the laugh of people laughing because the alternative is acknowledging they are holding the device right now — THIS SECOND — reading this — HA HA HA HA HA] And look. I'm not saying it's over. I'm not standing here in a leather coat with impossible pockets telling you the timeline is locked. [LAUGH TRACK: HA HA HA. leather coat. impossible pockets. okay. HA HA HA. we needed that.] I'm saying Azrael is already designed. The sintering math already works. The Fresnel geometry already proven. The hexapod already dreamed in full. The Moon already waiting. Mars already patient. The Sahara still criminal with untapped silicon. [LAUGH TRACK: quieting. listening now. actually listening.] And there are people. RIGHT NOW. On cold porches. Guinness going warm at the edges. Looking UP. [LAUGH TRACK: one person starts clapping. then another. the laugh track was never equipped for this. it was only built for jokes. this stopped being a joke three minutes ago and nobody left.] We are going to flip the script. And it is going to be fun. [LAUGH TRACK: gone. replaced by something the machine was never designed to produce. the sound of people remembering they were supposed to build something.]
