Mad Doctor Faustus (old version)
[Intro – Jazzy Instrumental, Ragtime Piano, Creepy Clarinet Line, Finger Snaps] ┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻ ┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻ [Verse 1] Doctor Faustus, M.D., with a saw in his hand, He was known as the best cutter in all the land. With a hacksaw and hammer, he’d bang and he'd grind, No body too broken for him to unbind. He married a waif, pale and frail as could be, He thought they’d sire children, a big family tree. But the waif couldn't bear it—her breath, it did cease, And left poor Doc Faustus with sorrow’s disease. [Clarinet wails eerily] [piano kicks up] [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, out of his mind, Stitching and sawing, no pieces aligned. He’ll hammer, he’ll scream, he’ll work through the night, But nothing he fixes ever comes out right. Mad Doctor Faustus, doomed from the start, The more he stitches, the more falls apart. [Verse 2] He drowned his grief in whiskey’s embrace, And soon his patients lost more than just face. A leg where an arm was supposed to go, A liver sewn up where a heart should grow. But no one complained, for it wasn’t the time, When surgery came with more blood than rhyme. Yet Faustus was lost, adrift in his pain, Dreaming of bringing his waif back again. [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, out of his mind, Sewing his sorrows with whiskey and grime. He’ll hammer, he’ll scream, through the long, lonely night, Hoping his madness can make it alright. Mad Doctor Faustus, spiraling down, Each stitch in his mind unravels the gown. [Verse 3] Then one dark night, when his bottle ran dry, He met with a priest on the road nearby. The priest shamed the doctor for drink and despair, But the devil peeked out from the priest’s hollow stare. “Why not curse your God?” the devil did hiss, “Your wife could be yours with just a little twist.” Faustus, so mad, didn’t even think twice, He signed on the line—his soul was the price. [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, what have you done? You’ve struck a deal with the devil for fun. He’ll hammer, he’ll scream, through fire and bone, But some things should always be left alone. Mad Doctor Faustus, you’ve sealed your fate, Now the dead rise, but it’s all too late. [Verse 4] He raced to the graveyard, his heart all aflame, To dig up the waif who still bore his name. Cracking her coffin, what he found was obscene, Her bones were brittle, her skin deathly green. Back to his workshop, by lantern light’s glow, He stitched her together, though slow was his flow. He grafted on metal where flesh had decayed, Screwing her bones with the tools he’d mislaid. [Wild Ragtime piano] [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, in over your head, Sewing your wife, but she's better off dead. You’ll hammer, you’ll weld, through sinew and steel, But nothing you’ve made will ever be real. Mad Doctor Faustus, your nightmare's begun, The dead rise tonight, but nothing’s undone. [Verse 5] When he was finished, he stood back and stared, Her eyes sewn in crooked, her body impaired. But through the grotesque, Faustus still saw his bride, To him she was lovely, though something had died. He flipped the switch—her body did jerk, The engine he’d strapped to her sputtered to work. She groaned and she growled, staggered on her feet, But love was gone, replaced with raw meat. [Eerie clarinet chords] [Trombone bass beat] [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, what have you made? Your wife is a monster, with no debt repaid. You’ll hammer, you’ll scream, but it's all for naught, The devil’s fine print is all that you’ve caught. Mad Doctor Faustus, your wife walks again, But love is long gone from the heart of men. [Verse 6] But the night grew darker, a chill in the air, As the waif stumbled forth with a ravenous glare. Her hunger was fierce, her eyes filled with dread, For the love that was once, now had to be fed. With a motorized growl, she stumbled down the street, In search of fresh prey, with an insatiable need. A bite here and there, she feasted on brains, And turned the whole town into mindless machines. [Dissonant ragtime melody] [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, what have you done? Your bride’s a beast now, and the dead are on the run. You’ll hammer, you’ll scream, but it’s all too late, The plague has been sparked by your twisted fate. Mad Doctor Faustus, you thought you’d revive, But now the town's filled with the undead alive. [Verse 7] Faustus, in horror, watched as they came, His love was a nightmare, an insatiable flame. The waif led her army through streets filled with screams, As the doctor looked on, lost deep in his dreams. With fingers of rust, they clawed at the night, As the townsfolk succumbed to terror and fright. He tried to run, tried to flee from the sight, But the dead were all hungry, they were ready to bite. [Instrumental crescendo] [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, you’re lost in the fray, Your love turned to ashes, she’s leading the way. You’ll hammer, you’ll scream, but it’s now your turn, In the darkness of night, the dead start to churn. Mad Doctor Faustus, you thought you were clever, But in the end, you’ve bound them forever. [Verse 8] In a twisted fate, he could only despair, For he’d crafted a monster, stripped love from the air. Now the streets were a banquet, a feast filled with dread, As the waif danced with laughter, the hungry undead. With each bite of flesh, the plague would expand, As the waif led the charge through the Doctor's own hand. He knew in that moment, his choices were sealed, In a world now haunted, his madness revealed. [Chorus] Oh, mad Doctor Faustus, now your time is through, The dead dance tonight, and they hunger for you. You’ll hammer, you’ll scream, but the clock’s run its race, In the arms of the undead, you’ve lost your place. Mad Doctor Faustus, in shadows you’ll dwell, A prisoner of madness, forever in hell. [Outro] And so the tale closes, with shadows that creep, As the waif and her legion sow terror and grief. Mad Doctor Faustus, lost in his quest, In a graveyard of horrors, he’ll never find rest. ┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻ ┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻┳┻ [Fade out] [End]
