36. A Sea of Broken Boats | Act V: The Chase and the Silence

V6

[The Scene] Following the destruction of Ahab’s whaleboat on the first day, the Pequod renews its pursuit of Moby Dick at dawn. The second day brings further devastation as the white whale turns upon the pursuing boats, smashing timbers and throwing sailors into the sea. Caught amid the wreckage, Ishmael struggles to survive while fearing for Queequeg and his fellow crewmen. As the survivors are recovered, he begins to recognise the terrible consequences of the commitment he once embraced so eagerly. The excitement of the hunt has given way to mounting dread, and his hope of returning home begins to fade. Yet despite the destruction surrounding him, Ahab remains determined to continue the chase, preparing for a third and potentially fatal confrontation. [Verse 1] The second dawn lay cold upon the sea, And yesterday's wreckage stayed with me. We took the oars and pressed against the tide, While Ahab's boat drew level at our side. [Verse 2] Again his whiteness thundered through the spray, A wall of living flesh across our way. I heard the straining planks begin to break, And felt the boat go under in his wake. [Chorus] A sea of broken boats beneath the sky, I hear the men around me shout and cry. And with each splinter drifting through the foam, I fear how few of us may journey home. [Verse 3] The Pequod's masts grew distant through the spray, I feared that even they might slip away. I clung to shattered wood upon the swell, And heard men calling where the timbers fell. [Verse 4] I thought of Queequeg, of the trust we'd made, And of the hand that held when I was afraid. The rope that bound our lives had held us fast, But how much longer could such fortune last? [Chorus] A sea of broken boats beneath the sky, I hear the men around me shout and cry. And with each splinter drifting through the foam, I fear how few of us may journey home. [Verse 5] I reached the deck; the waters rose and fell, I searched for friends whose fate no man could tell. I raised my voice when Ahab called the chase, And now I read the fear on every face. [Verse 6] The second day lay broken in the west, The sailors found a moment's fearful rest. Yet Ahab held his course into the night, As though we'd only just begun the fight. [Chorus] A sea of broken boats beneath the sky, I hear the men around me shout and cry. And with each splinter drifting through the foam, I fear how few of us may journey home. [Outro] The night came down; the Pequod held her way, And I could scarcely face another day. Where once I dreamed of distant coasts to roam, I dared not count how many would see home.
