Thick Smoke
(Tempo slows down, heavy emphasis on a single repeating guitar riff, voice is intimate and raw, leaning into the explicit content) You think that’s just weed burnin’? No, baby, that’s his soul turnin’. He ain’t just smokin' that paper, no, he ain't just gettin’ loose, That’s the only way he knows how to break the damn truce! He wants it deep, deep, deep down inside his lung, Wants that nasty, thick heat where the true words are sung. He wants that sticky exhale, that black fog in the air, 'Cause that’s the only lover, baby, who’s shown him any care! It goes down thick and dirty, Agh! and it makes his vision blur. That burning damn coal is the only thing that’s real to her! (Whispered, exhausted) Oh, take me. Take me right now. Solo (A screaming, feedback-drenched guitar solo. Blues scale, highly improvisational, full of messy bends and vibrato, replicating the sense of being totally lost in the smoke/high.) Chorus (Return to full power, faster, more frantic) Gimme that thick, sweet, goddamn smoke! Gimme that Texas blunt that makes a good girl choke! It’s a dirty, heavy curtain and it ain’t ever thin, Keepin’ the whole wide world from lookin’ in! Yeah! He’s pullin’ on that fire stick, watchin’ the red coal glow, He’s burnin’ down the memory ‘til there’s nowhere left to go! He’s chokin’ on salvation, right there by the flame, And he don’t wanna hear your pretty, sorry name! Oh, no! Outro (Voice becomes a desperate wail, band repeats a slow, fading riff, heavy reverb) Smoke! Smoke! Keep it comin’, Midnight Man! Keep it comin’ while you still can! Oh, yeah! That black cloak! That deep wood! Is anybody comin' back for good? (Screaming) No! No, they ain't! Just the smoke, baby... just the smoke... (The final drum hit crashes, followed by a lingering, distorted guitar feedback that slowly dies out.)
