Foreword Nobody actually knows why the eggs. There are explanations, they are delivered confidently, and every one of them was attached long after the practice was already running — which is the ordinary order of these things. People do something first, the reason arrives later, gets adopted, and then gets treated as the cause. Once a ritual has outlived its real origin the slot sits empty, and it will accept more or less any story that turns up with enough conviction. So I filled it. Mine involves a rabbit, a sealed cave, and a small piece of illegal distillation equipment. It fits about as well as anything else. Lyrics In the cave... in the dark... Something was hungry... He said the words... and I was listening... Sitting in the dark, the cave was cold They brought him in and sealed the rock, I'm told He said "this is my body and my blood Eat in remembrance" — and I was so glad The first bite hit like lightning through my skull And suddenly this bunny had it all I felt the power rising like a flame And nothing in this world would be the same Something growing, something burning Every cell inside me turning! Crack the egg and set me free! I'm the god you never see! Greatest bunny ever born to bounce! Superpower, every ounce! Telekinesis, oh it felt so good I moved the pebbles like I always could The water in the corner turned to wine My brain connected every single line I read the scrolls and every ancient book One single glance was all it ever took But here's the problem standing by the door Ten thousand kilos rock and maybe more Now I'm thinking, now I'm planning Every neuron in me scanning! Crack the egg and set me free! I'm the god you never see! Greatest bunny ever born to bounce! Superpower, every ounce! So now I had a problem... The rock was blocking everything... And I couldn't just... you know... move it with my mind... Because that would be stupid... Now a bunny moving rockies with a stare Would make the humans hunt me everywhere I need a scientific disguise So I took the water — would you be surprised? Turned it into wine, distilled it pure My little egg-shaped machine, the cure One sharp stare to crack the stone apart The ethanol explosion took my part! ...and it worked. They came at sunrise, found the rock had rolled A miracle, a story never told I cleaned my paws and bounced into the light Nobody has caught me, I'm too bright They tell the stories about rising dead But it was just a bunny getting fed They paint the eggs because they never know The little clay machine that made me go Crack the egg and set me free! I'm the god you never see! Now you paint the eggs every single spring For the egg-shaped still that set free your king! Painted eggs... morning dew... empty cave... ...you're welcome.
