The Little Horse

V6

Verse 1 She finds it in an old cardboard box, hidden underneath things she hasn't touched in years. Dust covers its little body. One ear is slightly bent. The fur isn't as soft anymore. She sits on the floor and gently wipes the dust away. And suddenly, she remembers. Verse 2 Her grandmother bought it for her when she was little. She remembers the way her grandmother smiled when she handed it to her. A little stuffed horse. She remembers holding it against her chest that night, afraid to let go. It was everything to her. Her best friend. Her comfort. The one thing that never left. Pre-Chorus She runs her fingers over the worn-out fur. And for a second she can almost hear her grandmother's voice again. Chorus So she holds the little horse against her chest. Just like she did when she was a child. And the years between then and now suddenly don't feel real. She presses her face into its old fur and starts crying. Quietly at first. Then harder. Because this little horse still remembers a version of her that she almost forgot. Verse 3 She remembers her grandmother's house. The smell of coffee. The old sofa. The warmth of the living room. Her grandmother sitting beside her while she told stories that only a child could believe. Back then, she thought those days would last forever. She didn't know that one day they would become memories. Bridge She whispers, "I miss you." Not knowing if she's talking to the horse or to the woman who gave it to her. Maybe both. Chorus She holds the little horse tighter. Its fur is wet from her tears. She doesn't care. She cries into it the way she used to fall asleep with it underneath her chin. For a moment she isn't an adult. She isn't tired. She isn't trying to be strong. She's just a little girl missing the person who made the world feel safe. Verse 4 She looks at the little horse through blurry eyes. The stitching is coming loose. The color has faded. But she recognizes it immediately. She remembers how many nights she couldn't sleep without it. How she took it everywhere. How she believed nothing bad could happen as long as she was holding it. Chorus Now she is the one who needs to be held. So she holds the little horse against her heart and lets every tear fall. Years of missing someone. Years of pretending she was okay. Years of growing older while a part of her was still waiting for her grandmother to come back. She cries until her chest hurts. And the little horse stays there. Exactly where it has always been. Outro She doesn't put it back in the box. She carries it to her bed. Places it beside her pillow. Then she turns off the light and holds it close. The room is quiet. Her tears slowly stop. And in the darkness, she whispers, "You were my whole world once." A long silence. "I think I needed you again." (aha)
