---------- Olena Teliha — a Ukrainian poet and revolutionary, a participant in the national liberation movement. She was born in 1906 in Saint Petersburg, later lived in Kyiv and in exile in Europe. During World War II, she returned to Kyiv and joined the Ukrainian Resistance. In 1942, she was executed by the Gestapo (Nazi secret police) at Babyn Yar. Her poetry is neo-romantic and strong-willed, centered on freedom, choice, and the struggle for Ukraine. ------------ This will be so: on a clear autumn day we will go our separate ways. Our souls will be tempered by hard struggle, so that the grains of victory may grow. And what for years was only a dream will turn into reality and possibility. Every bush and stone will be like the sun to us in these sharp and joyful moments. Just think: our villages and our people, and tomorrow we will return to our city! Our hungry chests will embrace with force their native air, warm and sparkling. But from somewhere a sinister wind will send sorrow, to throw the heart into an icy draft: everything is new… and the old cherry tree will not be met by a joyful mother… The soul will instantly stand guard, carefully yet sharply observing all other souls — cold or hostile — and the deep boundaries between them all. And often the heart will burn with pain, and something hot will grip the throat, when over the native, same field a different, unfamiliar song will hang. Everything awaits: despair and offense, and the homeland will feel like a foreign land. No need for sorrow! We will gather at once, to walk further along one shared path. We will sweep away boundaries with the fire of love, wade through stormy waters, to take fully all that belongs to us, and to merge again with our people.
