One summer afternoon I came home to find I had been named executor of an estate that made no sense... I found a post-horn on the bathroom wall, a muted signal in a scrawl. W.A.S.T.E. — We Await Silent Tristero's Empire, a shadow network wrapped in wire. Dead letters sent to names unknown, from cities burned to ash and bone. The mute, the damned, the dispossessed — they left a sign, and I obsessed. The sign came back, thin as a filing error — one horn, then two, the mute system waking. Every answer opens into harder skies. Tristero. Tristero. The word repeats. W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — what do you know? W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — I keep the mail, I keep the code. Out of band, out of hand, until the envelope knows my name! W.A.S.T.E. me deeper! At The Scope I watched the screen ignite, a dirty word in neon light. Beneath the silicon and the suburb lawns, the Tristero pulsed like a secret dawn. I followed freeways, traced the post, a ghost delivery at any cost. The auctioneer was bidding blind, and every lot was for my mind. If the horns answer, if the drops fall in sequence, I am no longer just a woman in cold daylight. The high place watches. The low road lies. Tristero. Tristero. The word repeats. W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — what do you know? W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — I keep the mail, I keep the code. Out of band, out of hand, until the envelope knows my name! W.A.S.T.E. me deeper! Muted post horn, calling my name. Muted post horn, out of the frame. Maybe the system was only a joke, maybe the joke was the system spoke through every bid and every oath, through every envelope and ghost. W.A.S.T.E. through the dark. W.A.S.T.E. leave a mark. W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — what do you know? W.A.S.T.E. me deeper — I keep the mail, I keep the code! Out of band, out of hand, until the envelope knows my name! W.A.S.T.E. me deeper! W.A.S.T.E.... We Await Silent Tristero's Empire...
