Vara-avain
Foreword Tenderness offered inside a prohibition arrives real and arrives rationed, and the two are not separable. It is genuinely given — that is what makes the question hard. If it were cruelty there would be nothing to work out. But a finite supply of something good, delivered on a schedule set by somebody else's constraints, teaches the person receiving it to arrange their whole capacity around a quantity that was never going to grow. Nobody in this is behaving badly. That is the part I wanted to sit with. Harm does not require anybody to intend it. Lyrics [Verse 1] Sä jätät tilaa kahdelle (You leave space for two) ennen kuin mä sisään tuun (before I come inside) askeleeni kuuluu täällä (my footsteps belong here) vara-avain on mun (the spare key is mine) [Verse 2] Sä muistat mua hiljaa (You remember me quietly) sä jätät valon illalla (you leave the light for the evening) tiedät enemmän kuin sanon (you know more than I say) liian hellä olet mulle (you are too tender to me) [Chorus] Älä ole hellä, kulta (Don't be tender, my love) älä jätä lamppua sun (don't leave your lamp burning) älä jätä tilaa kahdelle (don't leave space for two) en oo, en oo täysin sun (I'm not, I'm not fully yours) [Verse 3] Päivällä emme tapaa (By day we don't meet) sun käsi pakenee kadulle (your hand flees on the street) huulilla pidät nimeni (you keep my name on your lips) mut sun katse jää mulle (but your gaze stays with me) [Chorus] Älä ole hellä, kulta (Don't be tender, my love) älä hoivaa, en pyytäisi (don't care for me — I wouldn't ask) älä polta lamppua (don't burn the lamp) en voi antaa takaisin (I cannot give it back) [Bridge] Jos oisit ollut kylmempi (If you had been colder) oisin jättäny sun (I would have left you) mut hellät on kätesi (but tender are your hands) en saa olla enää mun (I cannot be mine anymore) [Final Chorus] Älä ole hellä mulle (Don't be tender to me) mut sä oot, mut sä oot, mut sä oot (but you are, but you are, but you are) älä koske aamuun (don't touch the morning) mut sä kosket, sä aina kosket (but you touch, you always touch) [Outro] Valo palaa, ilta lämmin (The light burns, the evening warm) huone hengittää hiljaa (the room breathes quietly) vara-avain polttaa taskussa (the spare key burns in my pocket) sä jätät tilaa kahdelle (you leave space for two)
