SLO Fo Sho (part four)
[Verse 1] Alright, your SLOs are set, the targets in your sights You're trackin' user impact for their genuine delight So how does this data help you when you start to drown And yer shipping features quickly just to see them falling down Enter error budgets -- the limits to our messes Not a license to be reckless, but a margin that addresses The need for calculated risk. Your SLOs behind it One hundred minus target is the easy way to find it If "three nines" is the service level that you must pursue Then point one percent becomes the risk allowance you accrue It lets you innovate, release, and sometimes have things break Each deploy's a conscious risk that you're prepared to take [Verse 2] But when the errors rack up and the budget's in decline It's a data-driven signal: reputation's on the line We're breaking trust, and losing love, mistakes will have to end Now pre-agreed responses kick in when it's time to mend With leadership aligned, priorities can bend Away from risks until we reach a stable healthy trend 'Til service health is solid, and that budget starts to grow A data-driven cycle, built into your SLO [Verse 3] So error budgets guide you, help you choose your fight But what can burn the budget? Keep that definition tight What 'bout a "planned outage" leavin' budgets lookin' thin For external SLA's, exemptions might fit in As contracts dictate. But let's keep it real For our internal SLOs, we track what users feel No "correcting" data; downtime is downtime, friend Regardless of the cause, from start until the end Your SLO must mirror the experience they truly knew And even if the root cause didn't fit in our purview A vendor down, a network storm, a widespread, nasty flaw Our customers expect we have a plan to handle Murphy's Law With systems of resilience, for all issues unforeseen Your SLO reflects their world, this ain't Halloween So don't be tryin' to mask it, let the true pain leave its trace That data drives improvement at the proper time and place [Verse 4] So data's honest, budgets make it plain But what if breached SLOs are still reporting pain? Don't just ignore it, hoping it will fade Acknowledge the breach, a decision must be made First, investigate! Before you sound the gong Could this be a false positive? Is the metric wrong? Bad definitions? Exclusions not applied with care? Fix up your telemetry, clear the foggy air But if the breach is real, the target truly missed Then examine several paths to action that exist Are SLOs too tight? A goal you can't attain? Renegotiate with stake-holders and explain the strain Or level up your operations if your tooling's causing grief If your process is outdated bring your on-call some relief And what 'bout dependencies, if they're the reason why? Go negotiate with them, don't just sit and sigh If their SLOs won't budge, or quality's still poor Then your own service has to improve to ensure Be more robust! Build resilience in your code With failovers standing by ready to accept the load Smart retries, caching layers, data close at hand Circuit breakers tripping graceful degradation plans [Verse 5] Alright, the session's closin', entrust these truths into your brain The absolute essentials, so your users don't complain First, monitors are smoke alarms, for trouble close at hand Your SLOs are report cards, they show where you stand Next, let reliability apply in every space Not just a wider average that can hide a troubled place Third, promise uptime to each customer we serve Not just "available to most" – giving less than they deserve And fourth, if all your SLOs are green, a lovely dashboard view But customers are hurting, then those stats aren't helpin' you See the real picture! Your objectives are askew The definitions failed to capture what they're going through And last, the master principle puts first the customer's Experience, we measure like a pro, not amateurs [Outro] That's the "pro" mentality inspirin' this rhyme Alla y'all is smart, I hope I didn't waste your time Ya dedicated skillful artists building to impress Earning love from customers and giving it your best Word up cloud reliability and service health, and Everybody droppin knowledge so I can share the wealth We holdin' it down, my friends, in all of our deploys If you thought my verse was dope, then make some noise
