The Little Things They Carry

It was just a little conversation, In the toy room loft one summer day. I shared a little secret with my granddaughters, How saying someone's name can brighten their day. “Read the name tag, say it kindly, Watch what happens when you do.” I didn't know that little moment Would become a lesson they'd hold on to. A few days later at Thanksgiving Point, Kadence came running, excited to share. “Nana! I saw her name tag and said her name! Her smile was soooo big!' Kadence shared” And suddenly I knew she'd listened, That little conversation had found a place. A lesson shared without much thought Had left a mark that time couldn't erase. Oh, the little things they carry, From the moments we don't plan. A simple word, a gentle kindness, A lesson learned firsthand. We may never know how far our words travel, Or whose hearts they'll touch along the way. But the little things we teach them May touch thousands of lives someday. We found a table, gathered 'round it, So Kadence could tell her cousins what she'd done. They were so excited, they all started watching For a chance to brighten life for someone. At the Museum of Curiosity, They thanked the girl who let us through. Every single little voice used her name, Behind the counter, multiple smiles grew! Oh, the little things they carry, From the moments we don't plan. A simple word, a gentle kindness, A lesson learned firsthand. We may never know how far our words travel, Or whose hearts they'll touch along the way. But the little things we teach them May touch thousands of lives someday. We plan out the big occasions and milestones, The grand adventures, the memories running deep. But sometimes what they carry with them Are little things we never knew they'd keep. A conversation, an example A moment when we let them lead. And suddenly they're out there planting Their own little seeds. Oh, the little things they carry, Long after summer days are gone. Oh, the little things they carry, Long after summer days are gone. The love we show, the things we teach them, Find a way of living on. And somewhere there's another stranger With a smile upon their face, Because a child remembered Nana And made the world a kinder place. It started in the toy room loft, Just a thought I wanted to share. And every time they pass that kindness on, A little of Nana's love goes with them . . . Everywhere.
