[Verse 1] Oh Rory was a red-gold pup With ears like tattered sails He chased the geese He chased the sun Across the hills and dales One stormy day in early spring He followed shining rain Till every drop stitched colored threads Across the Irish plain [Chorus] And it's hey diddle-dee for the dog in the clover Rolled in the riches the rainbow spilled over Out of the clouds where the wild winds blow Lands a golden retriever in a pot of gold Sing hey diddle-dee Let the stories be told Of the dog at the end of the rainbow [Verse 2] He tumbled through the clover sweet And into coins so bright They rang like tiny churchyard bells And lit the field with light Up popped a hundred little folk With beards of rust and rye "Who's robbed our hoard?" they roared at once Then saw his smiling eyes [Chorus] And it's hey diddle-dee for the dog in the clover Rolled in the riches the rainbow spilled over Out of the clouds where the wild winds blow Lands a golden retriever in a pot of gold Sing hey diddle-dee Let the stories be told Of the dog at the end of the rainbow [Bridge] They braided shamrocks in his fur They fed him bread and cream They danced a reel around his tail Till stars began to gleam Now every lane in Ireland knows When troubles take their toll Just follow paws and laughing folk To Rory's pot of gold [Chorus] And it's hey diddle-dee for the dog in the clover Rolled in the riches the rainbow spilled over Out of the clouds where the wild winds blow Lands a golden retriever in a pot of gold Sing hey diddle-dee For the young and the old With the dog at the end of the rainbow
