There was woodsmoke driftin’ Through a Colorado sky I was boilin’ coffee water She was watchin’ dragonflies Sunset on the ridgeline Old guitar and cut-off jeans Lord, she laughed like summer sounded Back when life was green We were strangers Friday evenin’ By the river and the pines But by Saturday at midnight She was leanin’ into mine And those campground conversations Turned into somethin’ strong Funny how a couple weekends Can start feelin’ like a song CHORUS Love and Mondays That’s the story of our lives Two barefoot dreamers Tryin’ to hold on to July Every Sunday night We’d watch the firelight fade away Fall asleep together Then say goodbye by Monday Love and Mondays Lord, ain’t that the truth Half our hearts in the mountains The other half punchin’ clocks for fuel She worked down in Denver I was fixin’ diesel rigs But every Friday sunset We’d run back to where we lived Little tent beside the canyon Cheap red wine and kerosene Talkin’ ‘bout forever Like forever was eighteen Sometimes storms would hit the valley Rain’d come crashin’ through the trees We’d just zip that old tent tighter And hold each other through the breeze And I swear those cold wet mountains Made us warmer than the sun Funny how bein’ half broke Can feel richer than anyone CHORUS Love and Mondays That’s the story of our lives Two barefoot dreamers Tryin’ to hold on to July Every Sunday night We’d watch the firelight fade away Fall asleep together Then say goodbye by Monday BRIDGE Now every time I smell pine needles Or hear an old campfire song I still see her in that flannel With the Rockies rollin’ on And somewhere there’s a younger version Of us dancin’ in the dark Tryin’ to stretch a weekend summer Long enough to beat the clock FINAL CHORUS Love and Mondays Still pullin’ opposite ways One wants freedom One wants paychecks and a place But for one wild summer We outran the world somehow Yeah, love was easy in the mountains Harder comin’ down Love and Mondays Still echoes through my mind Like campfire smoke in old blue denim And sunset in the pines.
