The Third Hour

The third hour. Still awake. But not lost. I used to wake at this hour with a chest full of questions, each one heavier than the last. Now I sit by the window, listening: one breath from the bed, one from the crib, and the old house settling like a tired animal. I do not need to go anywhere. I do not need to ask anything. There is a hand that finds my finger in the dark, and another that reaches for my shoulder without waking. I used to think the answer was far away, at the end of some long road I had not yet walked. The water I searched for was never at the end of the road. It was here, held in the cup of this small house, warm as a sleeping child, close as a wife's breath. I remember the roads now. The dust, the sea, the mountains, the silence. I remember the tree that asked nothing of me, and the sign that marked zero. But none of them were the destination. They were only the path that brought me back to this chair, this window, this hour. The old chair sits empty by the wall, but it is not abandoned. It is waiting, the way a door waits, the way a road waits for the one who will return. I have returned. Not as the same man who left— as the man who finally understands that leaving was only the first half of a single motion. The name they whispered over me when I was small still lives in the walls. It does not ask me to be a hero. It only asks me to be here. To stay. To wake at three and not be afraid. The water I searched for was never at the end of the road. It was here, held in the cup of this small house, warm as a sleeping child, close as a wife's breath. It was here all along. It was here all along. So I will sit with this quiet. I will let the clock mark the hour without fear. I will not leave to find what is already in my hands. I am home. I am home. The third hour. Still awake. Not lost. Found.
