08 Music of Molecules / The Boundary Between Non-Music and Music
The three essential elements of music are melody, harmony, and rhythm. Yet the sounds of a baby randomly striking a xylophone do not fit into any of these categories, and thus do not sound like music. John Cage’s 4′33″ is a work of complete silence, while Water Walk is a live performance using sounds — but without knowing the concept, it is difficult to recognize it as music. Jazz improvisation, on the other hand, is perceived as music when it has rhythm (not necessarily from percussion), or when it takes the form of ad-libs and solos within a scale. But if it is merely single tones played in complete freestyle, or nothing more than noise or shouting, it is difficult to experience it as music. By contrast, house music can be considered music even if it is only rhythm and bass layered with sound effects or sampled loops. Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians lacks clear melody or harmony, yet the persistent 16-beat pulse of piano and marimba is enough for us to recognize it as music. What, then, of the sound of the wind, the chirping of birds, the murmur of rivers, or the bustle of the city? And what about works like Mozart’s Musical Dice Game, where melodies are created through chance combinations — can such things be called music?
