[ACT II — SCENE 1 — MEANWHILE, LUCY] [Voiceover — Lady] Lucy and I sat together in her office, the lights low, the air still. It was Gladys [GLAD‑iss] birthday, and neither of us could let the day pass without a toast. I poured two glasses of Skawla Water —Lucy couldn’t have anything stronger tonight. She had to make it to the hospital before visiting hours ended. Her father, Lu Surrender, was sick again, and the doctors were whispering words Lucy didn’t want to hear. Outside, Coffy Town was buzzing with controversy. The Visitor’s Bureau had announced its final plans to move out of the HIP IP Tower and into a building directly across the street from Club Surrender. It had once been an extension of the club, where Gladys [GLAD‑iss] let unwed mothers stay to get themselves together. But since she also ran the club and some of the young mothers danced at Club Surrender... there were unseemly rumors. Now... Gladys [GLAD‑iss] never backed down from a fight. She had single-handedly created Coffy Town's Theater District where all premiere entertainment and good husbands, if you're lucky, can be found. She had officiated plenty of weddings in her day. Above all, Lucy's grandmother believed in love; community care was her key to every door. But her son, Lu Surrender, was not cut from the same cloth. When Gladys [GLAD‑iss] was unplugged, the building with a secret underground passage to Club Surrender was the first thing that Lu Surrender sold. Lucy had tried to warn her father that selling the building was a bad idea. But Lucy did not yet understand the true purpose she had inherited; she was bound by commitment to Gladys, a woman she revered, but did not fully understand. [Lady is making her voice deeper to imitate the voice of an older man] Why do you care if they are watching you? It's not like you have anything to hide, right? Good, then. Best price, Live nice, that's my motto. Stop up to da condo, let me school you. " [lady continues in her natural voice] That's all he said before accepting the best price. Everyone at the club, all their family members and friends, pitched in to build a black stone wall to block the passageway that many young women in domestic situations had used to run away from abusers who had slipped by The Sleepy Security Guard.
