[Verse 1] One little rat on a broken beam Two little tails in a flicker of steam Three curl in smoke like a slowing sigh Four fall quiet as a closed-up eye [Chorus] Count the burning rats in the dark My dear Every little shadow says “I’m right here” Sleep tight Live wire on the cold concrete Low hum Almost gentle Under your feet (mm, sleep) [Verse 2] Five And the plaster dust starts to rain Six tiny claws try to scrape through my brain Seven small sparks in a crooked line Eight and your hand reaches out for mine [Chorus] Count the burning rats in the dark My dear Every little shadow says “I’m right here” Sleep tight Live wire on the cold concrete Low hum Almost gentle Under your feet (ooh, hush) [Bridge] There’s a hum in the walls Where the bad dreams crawl All the buzzing in the wires knows your name If you close both eyes Let the soft ash rise They will march away the same [Chorus] Count the burning rats in the dark My dear Every little shadow says “I’m right here” Sleep tight Live wire on the cold concrete Low hum Almost gentle Under your feet (sleep now)
